Rodolfo Tristao is the head sommelier for the prestigious Belcanto José Avillez, the first restaurant to be bestowed a Michelin 2 stars in Portugal.

Rodolf’s passion for food and wine began at an early age in his grandmother’s café and grandfather’s vineyard. Their deep love of gastronomy and wine ignited a lifelong interest in the young Rodolfo. Along the way, two mentors, the winemaker Mário Louro and the first Portuguese Master Sommelier, João Pires also played pivotal roles in Rodolfo’s journey into one of Portugal’s top gastronomy and wine experts.

Rodolfo’s illustrious hospitality career includes some of greatest names in Portuguese cuisine: the Casa Dizima Paço de Arco, Restaurente Taberna 1300 and Michelin-starred Alma Chef Henrique Sá Pessoa. On the wine scene, he is a consultant for Wime, a company that curates small production wine. Considered among Portugal’s new breed of sommeliers trying to change the region’s wine image, Rodolfo and his peers are communicating the message that Portugal is not only about port wine and rosé but also produces great fortified wine, sparkling and cognac.
